Doug, the elder Selfs and I were wandering around last weekend after brunch and stumbled across a specialty liquor store in our neighbourhood, Vine Arts. The moment we walked in, we knew this place was special: unique liquors, specialty bitters PLUS passionate and knowledgeable staff. We were hooked.
We left this little cocktail cave with a special treat, Porter’s Tonic Syrup. This stuff is handcrafted locally here in Calgary (though I imagine you could find something similar at your local boutique wine & liquor store) and made the most delicious gin & tonics I’ve had in a while.
At first, we kept it pretty simple and made a classic gin and tonic (recipe below), but we were told by the wise staff that you could add a delicious twist easily by adding some herbs, so we also tried it with muddled cucumbers and rosemary. The result was fresh!
Porter’s Gin & Tonic
1 oz. Porter’s Tonic Syrup
2 oz. gin
1 wedge of lemon
